On June 30, 2006, approximately 2,600 jobs were cut in the Miami Valley area. UPS closed its air freight hub at the Dayton International Airport, resulting in the loss of 1,210 jobs. GM’s Moraine Assembly eliminated its third shift, eliminating 1,150 jobs. Three other area employers cut jobs on June 30: Johnson Controls (115 jobs), Jamestown Industries ( 90) and Centas Corp. June 23, 2006: Citigroup, Inc. announced that it will build an information technology center in Blue Ash. The new facility could bring 1,000 or more new jobs to the Cincinnati area, including jobs for software developers, project managers, systems analysts and other IT professionals. May 2006 Highlights

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.3 percent in May, down from 5.5 percent in April. From May 2005 to May 2006, nonagricultural wage and salary employment rose by 34,300. Among Ohio’s 88 counties, the May 2006 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 3.1 percent in Delaware County to a high of 9.2 percent in Monroe County. (source: Ohio Department of Development)
